Matsushima is famous as one of the three most scenic sights in Japan. Why don't you take a sightseeing boat to enjoy the view of the islands of Matsushima Bay, and spend a quiet time at Godaido and Zuiganji? Godaido is a Buddhist worship hall to enshrined Godaimyo (Five Dava Kings). “hibutsu” (Buddhist images not open for viewing), Godaimyoo(Five Dava Kings) are only opened for public viewing once every 33 years. Zuigan-ji Temple, the most ancient temple in Oshu, was completed by Masamune Date in the style of Momoyama architecture. The luxurious paintings on the parapets and fusuma which is Japanese style sliding door are a must-see.
The view spots which overlooks most scenic Matsushima are a general term of the four famous spots where you can enjoy a panoramic view of over 260 islands in Matsushima Bay. It refers to the four places of 'Okan Otakamori,' 'Reikan Tomiyama,' 'Kan Tamonzan' and 'Yukan Ogidani.' We also recommend the Michinoku Date Masamune Historical Museum and Matsushima Retro Museum located in the vicinity. Hopping around the sweets restaurants is also popular in Matsushima. I also recommend to drink a Matcha green tea at the Fujikohei Glass Art Museum, or at the Tsukimi Goten/Kanrante of the Date family.
In the 2011 the Great East Japan Earthquake, which caused enormous damages to the Pacific Coast, the earthquake and tsunami caused damage to the sightseeing boats, shops and facilities, but Matsushima was able to escape the devastation miraculously by the islands of Matsushima Bay. Now it has been restored this area completely, so you can enjoy the same scenery as before. Especially in the time of sunrise and sunset, it is an inexpressible sight. You will be fascinated by the scenic beauty of the spot.
